Endometriosis and Infertility

Endometriosis is an inflammation usually affected by estrogen. It causes propagation of blood vessels it can grow on the outside of your uterus, ovaries, and tubes and even on your bladder or intestines.

Endometriosis can render a woman difficult to get pregnant. Statistics show that 20% to 50% of women infertility is caused by endometriosis. In cases of endometriosis, it can treated through a surgical procedure called laparoscopy.

Endometriosis can alter the functions of the immune system along with the hormonal environment of the eggs. For patients wishing to become pregnant, this medical procedure may be considered prior to attempting conception, but laparoscopy does not ususally improve pregnancy rates.

The good news is there are various treatments available such as hormonal treatments and contraceptive pills, but the benefits are almost always accompanied by the side effects such as bloating and weight gain.

Ovarian cancer is a huge risk factor for patients with endometriosis. If you are diagnosed with endometriosis, do check for other forms of ovarian anomalies and lumps. As mentioned the risks are lessened with the use of birth control pills and correcting hormonal imbalances.
